You can complete the Responsible Serving® of Alcohol Course for California, which is approved by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and meets the requirements of the Responsible Beverage Server Training Act, AB 1221, on the Professional Server Certification Corporation’s website.

3. Apply for a New License with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control

  • Purpose: To legally serve alcohol in California, you need to obtain a bartending license from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
  • Instructions: You can apply for a new license at the nearest district office of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. All parties involved should be present. The average time to process an application is about 75 to 90 days. All licenses are renewed on a 12-month basis. Renewals must be paid on or before the last day of the month posted on the license.
