1.  Complete an Approved Alcohol Server Education Course

  • Purpose: This course is required to obtain a bartending license in New Mexico. It provides the necessary training for responsible beverage service.
  • Estimated Cost: The cost varies depending on the provider. It can range from $30.00 to $45.00.
  • Instructions: You can take the course online, in person, or virtually. Online courses are available 24/7 from Provider No. 85 or No. 98. In-person classes are currently only available in Albuquerque from Provider No. 59. Virtual classes can be taken from Provider No. 59 or No. 52. Ensure that you select the course for the State of New Mexico and not the national course.

2.  Apply for the Server Permit

  • Purpose: After completing the course, you need to apply for the server permit. This permit allows you to legally sell or serve alcohol in New Mexico.
  • Instructions: Ensure that you have the current mailing address listed on your application to receive your server’s permit by mail. If your address changes before the permit is issued, contact ABC to update your information. Temporary permits are valid for 120 days from the date the class was taken. If you do not receive the permanent card before this, contact ABC at (505) 476-4547 or email abc.serverpermits@rld.nm.gov.

3.  Renew the Server Permit

  • Purpose: The server permit is valid for three years from the date of the class. It must be renewed prior to expiration to continue legally selling or serving alcohol.
  • Instructions: To renew your Alcohol Server Permit, you will need to retake an approved Alcohol Server Education class every 3 years.
