How to Get a Bartending License in Washington

Feb 21, 2024 | 4 min read

To obtain a bartending license in Washington, you must complete the Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST), apply for a liquor license, and obtain either a Class 12 or Class 13 permit. The MAST is provided by certified third-party providers and can be taken online or in a classroom setting. The liquor license application process involves both the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) and the City. The permit you receive depends on your age; if you are 21 years or older, you will receive a Class 12 permit, and if you are between the ages of 18 to 21, you will receive a Class 13 permit.

1.  Complete the Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST)

  • Purpose: The MAST is required by law for anyone who serves, mixes, sells, and supervises the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption. It prepares bartenders, servers, and all front-of-house staff to handle difficult situations effectively and safely.
  • Estimated Cost: The costs of the training vary as the WSLCB does not regulate them. For example, the Washington version of the ServSafe Alcohol course and exam costs $32.00, but with the code WAPROMO20, the price reduces to $20.00.
  • Instructions: You can choose from a variety of providers offering both online and in-person classes. Some of the providers include ALERT Alcohol Training, Academy of Training and Prevention, ALES Washington, and AACEA, among others. Each provider has their own contact information listed, which you will need to keep for any issues encountered during the course or if you do not receive your permit within 30 days of course completion. The provider can also replace your lost permit, process a change in name or gender, or upgrade a Class 13 to a Class 12 permit.

2.  Apply for a Liquor License

  • Purpose: A liquor license is required if your business involves the importation, manufacture, distribution, or sale of alcohol. The liquor license is an endorsement on your Business License issued by the Washington State Department of Revenue (DOR) Business Licensing.
  • Instructions: Even if you already have a Business License, you must complete an additional Business License Application to obtain a liquor license. After submitting your application, the WSLCB will guide you through the licensing process to ensure your business meets all requirements. Applications should be submitted 90 days before the anticipated opening date. You can apply online through Business Licensing at dor.wa.gov and complete your application in the liquor licenses section. In addition to this, complete an Alcohol Dealer Registration and mail this form to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) at the address on the form.
