How to get a Food Handlers Permit in Utah?

Jan 31, 2024 | 3 min read

To obtain a food handlers permit in the state of Utah, you must complete a training program from a provider approved by the Utah Department of Health. The training can be completed either in-person or online. After successful completion of the training, you will receive a card or certificate which is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. If you lose your card, a replacement can be requested for a fee.

1.  Choose a Training Provider

  • Purpose: To ensure that the training you receive is recognized by the Utah Department of Health, you need to choose a provider from the state's list of approved providers.
  • Instructions: You can find the list of approved providers here. The list includes both in-person and online options. Contact information for each provider is available in the list.

2.  Complete the Training

  • Purpose: This training is required to ensure that you understand the food safety regulations and practices in Utah.
  • Estimated Cost: $30.00.
  • Instructions: Once you have chosen a provider, you need to register for and attend the training. For in-person training, you need to arrive 15 minutes early to register, and a photo ID is required. For online training, choose a course from the list of Approved Food Handler Training Providers in Utah. After successful completion of this training, you will receive a “Certificate of Completion” from the online vendor.

3.  Obtain Your Food Handlers Card

  • Purpose: The food handlers card is proof that you have completed the required training and are qualified to handle food in Utah.
  • Instructions: After completing the training, you will receive a card or certificate. If you completed the training online, the “Certificate of Completion” can be used in place of the actual Food Handler Permit for up to 30 days. During this period, the official permit will be processed and issued by the local health department jurisdiction where you reside.

4.  Request a Replacement Card if Needed

  • Purpose: If you lose or damage your card, or if you never received it in the mail, you can request a replacement.
  • Estimated Cost: $15.00.
  • Instructions: To request a replacement card, you need to complete a Food Handler Card Replacement Request Form available here. Your replacement card will not be processed until you pay the $15.00 replacement card fee.
