To obtain a food handlers permit in the state of Louisiana, you must complete a Food Safety Manager Course, pass the ANSI-Approved Exam for the Food Safety Manager Certification, and then apply for the LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate. This certificate is a prerequisite for the “gold seal” LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate. 

1. Complete the Food Safety Manager Course

  • Purpose: This course provides the necessary knowledge and skills to handle food safely and is a prerequisite for the LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate.

2. Pass the ANSI-Approved Exam for Food Safety Manager Certification

  • Purpose: This exam tests your understanding of the material covered in the Food Safety Manager Course and is a prerequisite for the LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate.
  • Instructions: After completing the Food Safety Manager Course, you will need to take and pass this exam. Certification from the testing company is required when applying for the LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate.

3. Apply for the LDH Food Safety Manager Certificate

  • Purpose: This certificate is required to get a food handlers permit in Louisiana.
  • Instructions: You can apply for this certificate either by paper application or online. The paper application requires a company check or money order payment, and a copy of the Food Safety Manager Certification. Cash, temporary checks, and payments with incomplete/incorrect information are not accepted.
