Feb 7, 2024 | 3 min read

To obtain a liquor license in Connecticut, you must apply through the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection. As of January 1, 2024, all applications must be submitted online. The application process involves several steps and documents, and it generally lasts about three to six months. The type of permit you need depends on your business type, such as on-premise (restaurants, cafes, bars, etc.) or off-premise (package store, grocery store, etc.). The number of permits issued is based on the population of your town.

1. Determine the Type of Permit Needed

  • Purpose: To identify the appropriate liquor permit for your business.
  • Instructions: Before you begin the application process, you must know what permit you'd like. If you need help deciding between the right type of on-premise or off-premise permit, you can use the Permit Identifier Quiz. If you hold other liquor permits, you should also check the downloadable Exclusion Grid to determine what other permits you can have at the same time.

2. Register for an eLicense Account

  • Purpose: To create an online account for submitting your liquor permit application.
  • Estimated Cost: Free.
  • Instructions: Visit www.eLicense.ct.gov and click on the "Register" link to create a new account. Choose to register as a "Business". Complete the required fields under "Account Information" to set up your account, including User ID, password, and email. Verify the email that was sent to your email account.

3. Submit the Online Application

  • Purpose: To apply for your liquor permit.
  • Estimated Cost: $100.00.
  • Instructions: Apply for your liquor permit by selecting "Initial Application". Once you have reviewed all the information and are ready to submit your application, click "Add to Invoice" to pay the non-refundable application fee of $100.00. Allow the Liquor Control Division a minimum of two weeks to begin reviewing your application. You will be notified by email once your application has been successfully logged into the licensing system.
