To obtain a food handlers permit in North Dakota, one must complete and pass an approved food education course. These courses are offered by the First District Health Unit (FDHU) and are mandatory for employees at licensed food establishments who cook, prepare or handle food, wash dishes, clean food contact equipment, as well as managerial and supervisory employees. 

The FDHU Food Safety class is held in the Minot office on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of March, May, July, September, and November. Other approved courses include the FDHU Food Safety for Food Service Employees online course, ServSafe Food Handler course, Tacoma-Pierce County Do It Right, Serve It Safe! course, StateFoodSafety course, TAP Series Food Handler Training, and Food Safe Pal.

1.  Register for an Approved Food Education Course

  • Purpose: To gain the necessary knowledge and skills to handle food safely and pass the Food Safety Certification Test.
  • Estimated Cost: $15.00.
  • Instructions: You can register for the FDHU Food Safety class held in the Minot office on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of March, May, July, September, and November. The Tuesday class is at 4:00 pm and the Wednesday class is at 9:00 am. Participants must pre-register for the class at FDHU Food Safety Certification.

2.  Complete the Online Course

  • Purpose: To prepare for the Food Safety Certification Test.
  • Instructions: After viewing all modules of the online course, you must make an appointment to complete the Food Safety Certification Test. To make an appointment in Minot, call 701-837-5121. For appointments in other locations, call your local office directly.
